Turf Tips: What to expect in winter

What to expect in winter: More weeds

When it comes to what to expect in winter the first word that jumps out is weeds. Weeds thrive in winter so it’s important to stay on top of them. Remember when applying weedkiller to always do this in the morning as the products work best with a full day of sun. Wait for dew to dissipate before applying. With weeds like nutgrass it’s important to get the nut as well as the leaf above ground. Some weeds require several applications, follow manufacturers instructions. If you need more advice on dealing with specific weeds you can call our office on (07) 3114 8281.

What to expect in winter: Dormant grass

The unique climate in South East Queensland means we don’t feel the full effects of winter dormancy, but the tips for dormancy are still good to follow. Warm weather grasses like couch go dormant in winter and can lose colour and will grow less. It’s important to raise your mower blades and leave more leaf through winter to help the lawn cope. The longer leaf will allow your lawn to maintain a high enough level of photosynthesis with the shorter days. If you want your lawn green for a special event despite the weather you can use a LSA’s Colour Guard, call us for more information on this product on (07) 3114 8281.

What to expect in winter: Less watering

With less growing and less heat your lawn needs less water. So save on the bills and dial back your watering schedule.

While you can water less, it’s important to still water. Some people make the mistake of not watering at all during winter. We recommend a deep watering every 2 weeks through winter.

What to expect in winter: Oversowing

If you have a lawn variety that goes dormant through winter and you want a luscious lawn year round there is a solution. You can oversow a cool season grass like Ryegrass. You simply spread the seed over your existing lawn. This will flourish through winter, before dying off when the weather warms up just as your existing lawn comes back to life.
