Why bring in fresh soil?
Your lawn is a living plant, and your soil is one of its main sources of nutrients. So when it comes time to lay your new lawn the existing soil will be drained of most of its nutrients. It can also be heavily compacted which creates problems for your new lawn when it tries to get water and oxygen from the soil.
By bringing in a fresh layer of quality turf soil you give your new lawn a fresh bed of nutrients to start its life on. This ensures there is plenty of food along with easy access to water and oxygen.
It also gives your lawn a good layer of soil to sink its roots into, this is especially important for some newer developments that have more crusher dust than soil under existing lawns.
The two main benefits you will see are the speed of which your lawn takes root and the ongoing health of your lawn. Using quality turf soil will give your lawn its best start life in your yard.
Why quality soil matters
Soil is no different to most things, you get what you pay for. It definitely pays to research your soil and ensure you are getting quality turf soil.
Cheap, low-quality turf soils can be low in nutrients. This will mean your new lawn will take root slower and will need more fertiliser and attention. Your new lawn may never be as healthy as it would be with quality turf soil.
Another problem with low-quality turf soil is weeds. Many customers who purchase the cheapest soil they can find end up with nutgrass sprouting up from their soil. The nut of nutgrass is too small to be screened out, so if the soil is full of nutgrass seeds normal processing of the soil won’t remove the nuts. While nutgrass can be sprayed out with Sedgehammer , the cost of this herbicide could mean you end up paying more than just using better soil.
We understand that we would all like to buy the best soil, however price does end up being a problem for many customers. It is definitely worth talking to our sales team as purchasing your soil and turf together can often work out cheaper. Alternatively talk to your local landscaping supply yard to see what quality turf soil they have that can fit in your budget.
How much quality turf soil do I need?
We recommend a depth of 50 – 100mm of quality turf soil when installing your new lawn. For a depth of 100mm you will need 1 cubic metre per 10m² of turf. For a depth of 50mm, you will need ½ a cubic metre per 10m² of turf.
