With lots of people currently buying and laying turf, now is a great time to share some tips for handling turf. While the worst of the heat is behind us, the weather still nice and warm therefore it is the perfect time to lay turf.
Farm fresh turf to your door
Our first tip for handling turf is to use our turf delivery service and as a result reduce your handling. While you can pick up our turf from our sales office (1/243 Bradman Street, Acacia Ridge).
Picking up turf results in double handling, since you have to load your turf onto your vehicle or trailer and then unload it again when you get home. Using our delivery service gets your turf right to your site, fresh from the farm.
Palletless delivery
The next tip for handling turf is to get the turf delivered as close as possible to where you want to lay it. We equip our delivery trucks with forklifts to ensure you get your turf exactly where you need it, provided there is site access. This reduces the distance from the pallet to where you will lay the turf.
Using palletless deliveries also mean there is no pallet to trip over while you work. It also means you don’t have a pallet to return when you finish the job.
Picking up slabs
At Jimboomba Turf Group turf, we overlap our slabs down the centre on the pallet for security.
Pull each slab from either side of the pallet in-turn, this avoids tearing the inside edge.
The safest way for handling turf is to roll or fold each slab. With each slab being .75m², you can fold each slab in half or thirds. This makes the slab more compact and therefore easier to carry.
Bend those knees
By folding or rolling the slab, you make it smaller and easier to pickup and carry. This leads to the next tip: bend with your knees! Every tradesman knows you lift with your knees, not your back. So be sure when handling turf to bend those knees and not just bend over as you put more pressure on your back.
