Where have I seen this?
Commercial spaces and sporting fields are the most common place you would have already seen lawn striping in use. It creates a dramatic effect perfect for televised sport and making a visual statement on public spaces.
A great local example here in Brisbane is Anzac Square in the CBD. We have had photos sent into us from this space showing our Sir Walter Buffalo beautifully striped.
Sport lovers will also be familiar with lawn striping, with many of the world’s biggest stadiums decorated with beautiful and often elaborate stripes. Fans of the English Premier League will be especially familiar with striping an important feature of all of the teams fields such as Liverpool’s Anfield stadium pictured here.
How does striping work?
The visual effect of the stripe is created by the grass being bent in different directions.
This causes light to reflect off each area differently creating the pattern.
By mowing areas side by side differently in a repeated sequence, the pattern will appear clearly across your space. Essentially you want to walk up one direction, and the back the opposite direction right beside the last strip. There are some great examples of patterns and how this works in Toro’s Lawn striping ‘how to’.
Just mowing your lawn in different directions isn’t enough, you will need something attached to your mower to help bend the grass over. Think of it as a comb for your lawn.
The professional way to stripe your lawn
There is a perfect tool to strip your lawn professionally, unfortunately it’s not readily available in Australia. The Toro Lawn Striping System is a purpose built lawn mower attachment that makes creating perfect stripes on your lawn simple.
Not currently available from local Toro suppliers this system is able to be purchased online from places such as Amazon. The launch of Amazon Australia might make some products like this easier to source.
The DIY way to stripe your lawn
If you don’t want to spend that money but still want to stripe your lawn all hope is not lost. All you really need is some kind of weighted roller attached to your mower.
The internet is full of all kinds of projects you can build for this. They range from very basic concepts to far more elaborately engineered items. A fairly easy to follow video making use of sand filled PVC pipe with all items easily sourced from Bunnings can be found HERE.
