How much to water a new lawn turf tip

How much to water a new lawn is a question we are often asked. A new lawn is an investment in time, energy and dollars, it is important to know how much water a new lawn needs to protect this investment. Some extra water in the establishment period goes a long way to a healthy lawn.

"Measuring

How much water

Many customers are not sure how much water a new lawn needs. As we mentioned in our “How much to water your lawn” blog post a great life hack is to use an empty plastic container under your sprinkler. When the water reaches 25mm up the side of the container that is enough for that area.

If you don’t have a spare container around another method to use is to time how long you are watering an area for. This will vary greatly depending on water pressure, is better than not measuring at all. For this, we recommend you water for 1 hour for every 50m². So if you order 100m² of turf you need to be watering at the bare minimum of 2 hours each day.

If you are using this rough timing method it is also important to think about coverage. Soaker hoses are best as they keep the irrigation low and can be curled to cover different areas. If you are using a traditional sprinkler you need to move it around ensuring all of the areas gets a significant amount of coverage.

How often to water a new lawn

Another important factor in how much to water a new lawn is how often you should be watering. When you install a new lawn you need to start watering no more than 15 minutes after you lay the first slab. Continue watering until the entire area has received a good soaking.

We then recommend you use the following schedule:

  • 1st & 2nd Weeks: 1 -2 times daily
  • 3rd & 4th Weeks: Once every second day
  • 5th & 6th Weeks: Twice a week
  • 7th Week onward: One deep watering per week
This is a starting point, if the weather is warm or windy we would recommend you increase the amount of watering. It is vital to watch the leaf of your grass, if it starts to thin out then you need to increase your amount of watering.

If in doubt give it some more water

Our best advice is if in doubt, give it some more water. You have spent time, energy and money on preparing your area and laying new turf. To setback your new lawn to save a few dollars on water is counter-productive. By being generous with your watering during the establishment period, your lawn will establish the quickest and you will have a healthy and vibrant lawn.
