Fighting winter weeds is front of mind for many lawn lovers right now as winter weeds rise up. Your lawns winter dormancy gives winter weeds all the opportunity they need to thrive, here are 3 of the most common winter weeds and how to fight them.
Wintergrass
Winter grass grows in tufts with fine, bright green leaves and triangular-shaped seed heads. If this winter weed drops its seeds it will return much worse the following years so it must be treated as soon as possible.
When it comes to fighting winter weeds it can’t get any easier for Winter Grass as it can be controlled with a pre-emergent like Oxafert. If you didn’t put pre-emergents before winter all hope is not lost, you can fight winter grass with Amgrow Winter Grass Killer which is available from your local Bunnings and is safe for all varieties including Sir Walter DNA Certified.
Bindii
Another winter weed we have to battle with is bindii, a low growing weed with a flower at the centre. This is especially bad for our bare feet with their prickly seed pods a painful reminder of their existence.
Winter is the perfect time for fighting winter weeds because you can control them before they produce their seeds and spread further. Bindii can be controlled with Amgrow Bin-Die herbicide which again can be found at Bunnings and is safe for all of our turf varieties from Sir Grange to Sir Walter to TifTuf and couch.
Creeping Oxalis weed
Creeping oxalis weed has small light green heart-shaped leaves similar to clover. It has small bright yellow flowers about 3mm in diameter with five petals. As its name suggests it spreads quickly, running along the surface of the soil. It spreads with a bang thanks to seed pods that explode when they dry out.
So getting as always when fighting winter weeds, taking action early is important to get on top of the weeds before they spread. Creeping oxalis weed can be found the same way as bindii, with Amgrow Bin-Die herbicide the perfect selective herbicide to help you fight its spread.
