Lawn Problems
If you have Sir Walter grass you already know that you have very few lawn problems when it comes to insects and pests. It is very disease resistant as well. But we do get questions on other problems of people trying to grow Sir Walter. Many of them can be traced back to insufficient watering, fertilizer problems or poor soil. Here are some things to check before calling in the experts:
Adequate Watering
One of the reasons your Sir Walter is not flourishing might be lack of water. One way to tell that is if any of your lawn is near a water source like an outside tap. If the lawn is greener there than anyplace else you know the rest of the lawn needs more water.
Proper Fertilizing
Another problem is inadequate fertilizing. If the grass over by your garden is greener then the rest of the lawn then you might have a fertilizer issue. The Sir Walter could be leeching the nutrients you supply to the garden through your fertilizer. The recommended amount of Sir Walter Lawn Food is 40 grams per square metre. Once the fertilizer is spread, water until the lawn is quite soft. Repeat the watering every 6 weeks. If you want a test spot to see if it you could do with more but a small area, about 1 square metre and double the fertilizer. Water and compare.
Poor Soil
Poor soil is often a problem. The best thing you can do for your Sir Walter is make sure you have good soil for it to get off to a good start. You need a minimum of 100mm underneath to avoid the need for top dressing.
Seasonal Issues
If it is winter and it looks like you are having lawn problems then it probably because you lawn needed something in the autumn season that it didn’t get. But just hang in there until the spring time and you can baby it back to good health.
