Here in Southeast Queensland, we're pretty lucky when it comes to winter. While the rest of the country is rugging up and watching their lawns fade out, ours manage to stay relatively active. And with a little bit of effort from you, a SEQ lawn in winter can look great for the whole season! The secret is having the right products on hand and using them at the right time. We've been helping Queensland families do exactly that for over 50 years, and this is the kit we'd recommend.
ColourGuard Plus — Keep the colour in your corner
Even in SEQ, warm-season grasses like Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo and Empire Zoysia can soften in colour as the days shorten and temperatures drop. It's a natural part of the cycle for these grasses, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with a dull yard through the cooler months. ColourGuard Plus is a 100% organic, non-toxic grass colourant with a soluble fertiliser blended in, meaning it keeps your lawn looking lush and green while quietly nourishing it at the same time. It's safe for the kids and pets once dry, won't wash off or stain hard surfaces if you apply it carefully, and lasts up to three months per application. If there's one product to grab before winter sets in, this is it.
Lawn Solutions OxaFert — Get ahead of the weeds
The single most effective thing you can do for your lawn in winter is stop weeds before they ever show their face. That's exactly what Oxafert does. It's a pre-emergent herbicide combined with a slow-release fertiliser, so it’s a two-in-one product that prevents weed seeds from germinating while feeding your turf at the same time. Whether it’s Winter Grass, Crowsfoot, Creeping Oxalis or Crabgrass you’re fighting with, Oxafert takes care of the lot, as long as you get it down before they sprout. The 3kg bag covers up to 100m², applies easily with a handheld spreader, and just needs a good 10mm of water to activate. Think of it as giving your lawn a head start on the season rather than playing catch-up later.
Estate Broadleaf Herbicide — When weeds are already showing up
If you're already spotting Bindii, Clover, Capeweed, or Creeping Oxalis in the lawn, OxaFert won't help, because it only works before weeds emerge, not after. That's where Estate earns its spot in the shed. This selective herbicide knocks out broadleaf weeds without harming your lawn, and winter is the ideal time to apply it, while those weeds are still leafy and before they get the chance to seed and spread. Treating Bindii now means not finding it with your bare feet come spring. If you've ever done that, you know exactly why it's worth getting on top of early!
Fertiliser — A steady feed to hold through winter
Your lawn isn't putting on its best growth in winter, so this isn't the time to load it up with fertiliser. But a light, quality feed in early winter gives your turf the foundation it needs to hold its colour, maintain root health, and fire back strongly when the warm weather returns. A granular slow-release option applied once at the start of the season is all it takes. Browse our fertiliser range via our online store to find the right one for your variety, and if you're not sure which one to go with, give us a ring and we'll give you the friendly advice you’re chasing.
The short version
You don't need a full trolley of products to get through winter in good shape. If you start with ColourGuard Plus and OxaFert, you've covered the two things that matter most: colour and weed prevention. Add Bin-Die if anything has already popped up, and a light fertiliser to keep the roots happy, and you're set.
