Winter Weed Control: How to Stop Weeds Before the Cold

Prevention > Cure: Getting on Top of Winter Weeds Before The Cold Hits

Winter’s
on its way, and while your lawn is starting to ease back into a slower pace, unfortunately, the weeds are not!

Winter grass, bindii, clover, and a whole cast of other uninvited guests, are already sizing up your lawn for a takeover. And here's the thing: the best time to stop them is right now, before they've had the chance to move in and get comfy. A few smart moves over the next few weeks can save you a whole lot of grief between now and spring, and Jimboomba Turf are here to help with that.

Block Weeds with Pre-Emergent Herbicides

The most effective thing you can do for your lawn this season is get a pre-emergent down before soil temperatures drop below around 14°C. Because once winter grass germinates, you've got yourself an uphill battle.

Oxafert does double duty here, acting as both a pre-emergent herbicide and a fertiliser in one product. That means you're stopping weed seeds in their tracks while giving your lawn a solid nutritional boost at the same time. It's one of the most efficient things you can put down at this time of year, and it takes the guesswork out of what to reach for first. Ripper!

Controlling Existing Broadleaf Weeds

If clover, bindii, or other broadleaf weeds are already starting to show their faces around the edges, it's time to act. Estate Broadleaf Herbicide Concentrate is a reliable, easy-to-use option for knocking those problem weeds back without harming your lawn. Mix it up, apply it while the weeds are still young and actively growing, and let it do the work.

Getting on top of broadleaf weeds early in the season means they're not competing with your lawn for moisture and nutrients through the cooler months, and they're not seeding out ready to cause even more trouble come next year.

Why a Healthy Lawn Prevents Weeds

Here's something worth remembering: weeds don't just show up randomly. They're sneaky little things, making themselves at home in gaps that already exist. Thin, patchy, or undernourished turf gives them exactly the foothold they need.

One of the best things you can do to keep weeds at bay long-term is simply to keep your lawn in good nick. Exceed Liquid Fertiliser is a great option heading into winter, as it delivers a balanced nutrient hit that encourages strong, dense growth. The kind of tight, healthy coverage that leaves very little room for weeds to establish in the first place! A lawn that's well-fed and vigorous is a lawn that naturally crowds out the competition.

Your Simple 3-Step Winter Weed Plan

Not sure where to start? Here's a straightforward approach that covers all the bases.

Apply Oxafert now, before soil temperatures fall too far, to block winter grass and other weed seeds from germinating in the first place.
If you're already seeing broadleaf weeds popping up, hit them with Estate while they're still small and easy to knock back.
And keep up with Exceed, now and further into the season, to maintain a thick, healthy lawn that does a lot of the defensive work for you.

That's it! It’s not complicated, and all the products we have recommended are available through the Jimboomba Turf online store, for pick-up or delivery right to you. A little attention now, and you'll be heading into spring with a lawn you're proud to show off, rather than one you're trying to rescue.

Any questions about what your lawn needs this winter, just give us a call or drop into the farm. We've been growing turf in Southeast Queensland since 1973, and we're always happy to point you in the right direction.
