Why Winter Is a Ripper Time to Lay Turf in Southeast Queensland

Most people think that laying turf is a springtime job, and leave it at that. It's a fair assumption, but up here in Southeast Queensland, winter tells a different story. While the rest of the country is rugging up and waiting for the season to turn, our winters are mild enough that the ground stays workable, the grass keeps ticking along, and a freshly laid lawn can establish beautifully before the heat of summer arrives.

At Jimboomba Turf, we've been growing turf in the Logan Valley since 1973, and if there's one thing those years have taught us, it's that Queensland winters are one of the best-kept secrets in the turf world.

The weather works in your favour

Southeast Queensland winters are gentle. Daytime temperatures regularly sit in the high teens to low twenties, nights are cool but rarely cold enough to cause damage, and the humidity largely backs off. That combination creates near-ideal conditions for new turf to settle in without the stress of extreme heat or the shock of frost.

During winter, the water requirements of freshly laid turf are significantly less than during our warmer months, giving the grass the ability to focus its energy on putting down roots rather than managing heat. That head start pays dividends come spring, when warmer temperatures kick growth into gear.

Less watering, less fuss

One of the practical wins of winter installation is the reduced watering burden. Cooler temperatures mean the soil holds moisture longer, which takes some of the pressure off during that critical first few weeks of establishment. You'll still need to water consistently, but we can guarantee you won’t be out there twice a day in 35-degree heat trying to keep a new lawn alive. Plus, in this economy, the difference in the water bill can really make a meaningful difference to the back pocket!

Get ahead of spring growth

There's a real strategic advantage to laying in winter that a lot of people overlook. By the time spring arrives, turf installed in July or August has already had weeks to anchor into your soil. The root system is established, the lawn is holding firm, and when those warmer months roll in and trigger a flush of new growth, your lawn takes off from a position of strength rather than starting from scratch.

If you wait until spring to lay, you're right in the middle of that growth window, and you're also competing with every other homeowner, landscaper, and council project that had the same idea. Winter availability tends to be better, installation can move at a more considered pace, and your backyard is sorted while the neighbours are still doing the site prep for theirs!

The right variety makes all the difference

Not every turf variety handles winter equally, and that's where knowing your options matters. Zoysia Australis is a standout for its exceptional durability and year-round appeal, holding colour well through our mild winters and establishing a dense, resilient lawn that's built to handle the Queensland climate. Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo brings that reliable, broad-leaf softness that Queensland families have trusted for decades, and it performs comfortably through our mild winters without skipping a beat. For something a little more refined, Sir Grange Zoysia offers exceptional density and low maintenance requirements year-round, making it a popular choice for homeowners who want a lawn that looks good without a lot of input.

Grown right here in the Logan Valley

Every slab of turf that leaves Jimboomba has been grown in the red volcanic soils of the Logan Valley, which is soil that's been producing quality turf for more than fifty years. That heritage isn't just a story we tell; it's the reason our turf arrives healthy, well-rooted, and ready to perform from day one.

If you've been putting off the lawn project until the weather warms up, give us a call. Winter might just be the right time to get it done. Contact the Jimboomba Turf team to talk through variety options, measure up your area, or arrange a delivery. We're here to help you get it right.
