Cooler weather is on the way, and if you've been putting off a bit of lawn care, now's the time to stop procrastinating. The next few weeks are some of the most important windows in the whole lawn calendar. A bit of well-timed effort right now will set your lawn up to bounce back strong come September, and save you a whole lot of headaches in the process.
Here's what we'd be doing if it were our lawn.
Keep it green while things slow down
Warm-season grasses naturally lose some of their colour as they ease into winter dormancy. It's completely normal, but normal doesn't mean you have to stare at a dull, washed-out lawn for the next few months if that bothers you.
ColourGuard Plus is a concentrated liquid lawn colourant that restores a natural-looking green to dormant or semi-dormant turf. It's safe, straightforward to apply and keeps your lawn looking the part all winter long without pushing any artificial growth at the wrong time of year. If you've got mates coming over for a backyard barbie or you just take a bit of pride in the street appeal, it's well worth having a bottle in the shed, and it’s safe for the kids and the pets once dry! You can grab it from our online store.
Get a feed in before the cold sets in
Your lawn might be slowing down, but it still needs something in the tank to get through the colder months in decent shape. A good pre-winter feed supports root development, helps maintain density and gives your lawn the best chance of holding its colour and structure until the warmth returns.
Exceed Liquid Fertiliser is our go-to for this job. The hose-on format makes it about as simple as lawn care gets. Just connect it to the hose and you're away. Balanced nutrition, fast uptake and a lawn that heads into winter with some fuel in the tank rather than running on empty.
Get on top of weeds before they get on top of you
This is the one people leave too late, every single year, and it's the one that causes the most grief come spring.
Broadleaf weeds like bindii, clover and creeping oxalis love the cooler months because your lawn slows down and stops competing as hard. Once they're established, they're a real pain to deal with, and bindii in particular has a nasty way of making itself known when bare feet get involved in September. A true childhood classic!
Estate Broadleaf Herbicide targets those broadleaf weeds directly and is suitable for use on most common lawn varieties. Get it on now while the weeds are young and actively growing, and you'll be thanking yourself later.
Winter grass is a separate issue and one that needs even earlier attention. It germinates when soil temperatures drop to around 14°C, and once it's up and away, your options become a lot more limited. Oxafert is a pre-emergent herbicide and fertiliser combined, stopping winter grass seeds from germinating while feeding your lawn at the same time. Apply it before that soil temperature threshold hits and you've saved yourself a world of pain down the track.
Lift your mowing height just a touch
One simple change that makes a genuine difference over winter is raising your mowing height by around 5 - 10mm compared to your summer setting. A slightly longer leaf allows your lawn to absorb more sunlight during the shorter days, which helps it maintain energy and stay healthier through the cold. It also puts less stress on the plant when growth is already slow, and a slightly thicker canopy makes it harder for weeds to find a foothold. You don't need to let it go shaggy, just take it up a notch and mow a little less frequently than you would in the warmer months.
