Buying turf in warm weather is perfect for a fast establishment of your new lawn. With heatwaves coming sweeping through our corner of the world in the next coming weeks, now it’s a great time to install turf. However, the heat can also cause some problems so here are a few tips to ensure the health of your new lawn.
Timing is everything
It’s always important to lay your turf as soon as possible. This is even more important when buying turf in warm weather. To ensure your turf goes from our farm to your yard as quickly as possible, it is important to plan every step carefully. Properly plan your preparation to ensure it is complete before your turf arrives. This especially means allowing for any delays. Your tradesmen could be delayed on prior jobs, or maybe for yourself taking longer to get the preparation perfect.
With the preparation done you need to get your turf home. The fastest way is to plan ahead, and have your new turf variety delivered direct from our farm to you. You can pick up your turf from our Acacia Ridge sales office or from your local Bunnings, but nothing is as direct as ordering your turf for delivery. When selecting your delivery day ensure it is a day you can have free, ready to get straight to work on laying it. The worst thing you can do is have it delivered but then have to leave it because you have something else to do.
Get it down
Now that you have your turf, here comes the most important part: get it down fast. If buying turf in warm weather has a theme, it’s definitely that time is of the essence. If you have followed our previous tips your preparation is 100% complete, and your schedule is clear. There is plenty of time for your new turf to rest when it’s on the ground, so get to work and get it laid down. Just like you want to stretch your legs after a long drive, by the time your turf gets to your house it is ready to stretch its roots and get comfortable.
It is also important to start watering straight away. We recommend starting to water no later than 15 minutes after you lay the first slab. You want to thoroughly soak each slab as it goes down. It is also important to use a water-filled roller to go over your new lawn when you are finished. This ensures your new turf has great contact to the soil and access to more moisture.
Water in well
Any time you lay a new lawn it’s vital to increase your watering for the first few weeks. Buying turf in warm weather increases this importance. The heat quickly evaporates moisture so it’s important to stick to our recommended watering guide for the first few weeks. Your water requirements will also depend on your local conditions but this is a great starting point.
While there still could be some slightly cooler weather currently, this is still a perfect excuse to tear up the old lawn and lay your new lawn fit for purpose. As a bonus by doing the work before laying in summer, the work will be cooler rather than when the weather really starts to warms up.
